What’s new with Klorfasil clean water?
Has using Klorfasil improved the health of your family?

“It protects my family. Since we have Klorfasil we don’t find any problems.“
Klorfasil: Safe Water for a Thirsty World
Here in the United States it is easy to take water for granted. It is clean, safe, and abundant. In Haiti, such a necessity as water can be a source of illness or even death. Contaminated water is the leading cause of infant mortality and illness in Haiti. Nearly half of all deaths in Haiti are due to water-borne diseases.

“Yes, because my two children don’t get diarrhea.”
Here at Saint Brendan’s we have been making a difference. We launched a safe water project called Klorfasil [which in Creole means “easy chlorine”] in our sister parish of Our Lady of Fatima in Bassin-Zim. This began in November of 2008. It is an easy, inexpensive and effective way to provide clean water in developing countries.

“Yes, because the cholera can’t catch us.”
This is how it works: a family receives a sealed five gallon bucket, a spigot, a bottle of dry bleach that dispenses in premeasured doses, training, and follow-up visits to assure correct usage. With this a family of five has clean water for an entire year, and here’s the best part: it only costs ten dollars!

Madame Marita Raphael

“Yes, it does because they are not sick.”
Since its inception in 2008, the Klorfasil program is now being used effectively by 1000 families within the Bassin-Zim area and 500 families outside the community who sought it out due to the Cholera epidemic. We are happy to report that there have been only a few cases of Cholera in the vicinity and none were fatal. Bishop Simon Pierre Saint-Hillien of Hinche [the nearest town] has been promoting the program for us in his sermons. Bishop Saint-Hillien attributes the fact that there have been so few cases of Cholera and no fatalities, directly to the use of Klorfasil.

“Yes, since Klorfasil we are in good health and our children have not contracted diarrhea.”
500 Klorfasil units remain to be distributed in Bassin-Zim for practically all families to be using Klorfasil. Once this is achieved, only Klorfasil refills and testing kits will be necessary.

Monsieur and Madame Odines Francois
Using Klorfasil for 3 Years (since the beginning)
“Yes, it helps us prevent cholera and other kinds of disease.”
It is easy to feel helpless in the face of poverty and suffering, iIt can feel overwhelming, but you can choose to make a difference. Families at St. Brendan’s are reaching out effectively to families in Bassin-Zim and are making that difference. Good work has yet to be done.
The next time you reach for a glass of water, think about our sisters and brothers in Haiti. As we would do for any thirsty member of our family, consider handing them a glass too.

Berry Riché’s Visit to St. Brendan’s
It was thrilling to have Berry Riché visit St. Brendan’s over holiday season. For those that do now know Berry, he has been the translator for many years when the HaitiReach ministry would visit Our Lady of Fatima in Bassin-Zim, Haiti. Over the years Berry has excelled in his educational pursuits, and now lives in Richmond, Virginia, attending J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. The Richmond Times-Dispatch has an article about Berry with more details on how he and three other Hinche scholars we able to come to the United States and attend college. Read More
